How Blogs Work in 7 Easy Pieces is a short write-up on the technology behind "blogs" and how people use the technology. I personally don't ping an aggregation server upon update but I do use RSS on my own blog.
How To Speed-Read the Net is one of the few good introduction articles on RSS readers. I use an RSS reader several times a day at work and at home. I frankly can't imagine being without an RSS reader and it is usually the first thing I install after the operating system during a reinstall of one of my desktop systems.
